Level 1S/1E qualifies participants as a Fachkundig unterwiesene Person (FuP) per DGUV Information 209-093. FuPs may carry out general work on HV vehicles – moving vehicles, bodywork, tyre changes – but only under the supervision and responsibility of a Fachkundige Person Hochvolt (FHV). Independent de-energising is not permitted.

Who is Level 1S/1E for?

Level 1S/1E is aimed at employees who regularly carry out tasks on or near HV vehicles – without independently de-energising or dismantling HV components.

Workshop Assistants
Technical assistants supporting automotive mechatronics technicians during HV work
Apprentices
Automotive mechatronics apprentices in years 1–2 before obtaining Level 2S
Body Shop Technicians
Specialists performing bodywork and paint work on HV vehicles in partner workshops
Tyre Specialists
Employees in tyre centres and winter service operations with a growing share of EVs
Dismantling Assistants
Assistants in dismantling operations working on already de-energised vehicles under supervision
Production Assistants
Workers in vehicle production with tasks on HV vehicles under workshop management

What does Level 1S/1E cover?

2–4 teaching periods focused on hazards, scope of authority and safe behaviour under Fachkundige Person Hochvolt (FHV) supervision.

⚡ Course Topics

  • Fundamentals of high-voltage technology and HV system architecture (traction battery, inverter)
  • Physical hazards: electric shock, arc flash, short circuit
  • Thermal runaway hazards from Li-ion batteries
  • The 5 safety rules per DGUV Regulation 3
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) and correct application
  • Limits of the FuP's scope of authority
  • Working with the Fachkundige Person Hochvolt (FHV): communication and release processes
  • Behaviour during HV incidents, accidents and emergency measures
  • Documentation and reporting obligations

FuP vs. Fachkundige Person Hochvolt (FHV): The key difference

Level 1S/1E – Fachkundig unterwiesene Person (FuP)

General work on HV vehicles under supervision of a Fachkundige Person Hochvolt (FHV). No independent de-energising. No HV voltage measurement.

Level 2S/2E – Fachkundige Person Hochvolt (FHV)

Independent de-energising, verifying voltage freedom and working autonomously in the de-energised state.

Important: As a FuP you may not dismantle HV components, perform voltage-freedom measurements or independently de-energise any HV vehicle. These tasks require at least Level 2S.

Who can attend – and how does it work?

Level 1S/1E has a low entry threshold and can be completed in 1.5 to 3 hours.

Entry Requirements

  • Level S/E (Sensibilisierte Person) recommended but not strictly required
  • No formal electrical training required
  • Suitable for all employees with professional HV contact
  • Training language: English (German also available)
Next step: Automotive mechatronics technicians and technicians who wish to de-energise independently should aim directly for Level 2S – it is the professional qualification for independent HV work.

Training Schedule

  • Welcome & Overview: Learning objectives and legal classification (FuP role)
  • HV System Knowledge: Architecture, components, hazards
  • Safety Rules: The 5 rules per DGUV Regulation 3
  • PPE Practice: Selection, fitting and inspection of personal protective equipment
  • Scope of Authority: What may the FuP do – what must the Fachkundige Person Hochvolt (FHV) handle?
  • Emergency & First Aid: Behaviour during HV incidents
  • Knowledge Check & Certificate: Short quiz, then certificate issuance

Participation Certificate – Level 1S/1E

After the training and knowledge check, all participants receive a digital certificate as FuP per DGUV Information 209-093.

The certificate documents:

FAQ – HV Training Level 1S/1E

What may a FuP (Level 1S/1E) specifically do?
A FuP may under Fachkundige Person Hochvolt (FHV) supervision: move and park vehicles, carry out tyre changes and wheel work, perform bodywork and interior tasks, clean and prepare vehicles, and support simple diagnostic work. Not permitted: independent de-energising of the HV system, HV voltage measurement, dismantling of HV components.
How long does the Level 1S/1E training take?
2–4 teaching periods (45 min each) – i.e. roughly 1.5 to 3 hours. Duration depends on the group's prior knowledge. Participants without Level S/E background benefit from 4 TP; those with existing Sensibilisierte Person can complete it in 2 TP.
Does Level 1S/1E automatically lead to Level 2S or 3S?
No. Level 1S/1E (FuP pathway) and Level 2S/2E (FHV pathway) are two completely independent qualification routes under DGUV 209-093 – not a step-by-step ladder. Level 1S/1E is not a stepping stone or prerequisite for Level 2S/2E.

Level 3S requires fully completed Level 2S (DGUV 209-093, Section 5.1.5). Anyone who wants to work independently on HV systems enrols directly in Level 2S – regardless of whether they previously completed Level 1S/1E training. The entry point (A, B or C) depends on electrotechnical background, not on a prior HV course.
Is Level 1S/1E mandatory for automotive mechatronics technicians?
For qualified automotive mechatronics technicians working on HV vehicles in a workshop, Level 2S (Fachkundige Person Hochvolt (FHV)) is the appropriate qualification – they can enter via entry route B directly. Level 1S/1E is suitable for assistants, apprentices in years 1–2 or non-technical staff with occasional HV contact.
How often must the FuP qualification be renewed?
Annual instruction is required. §12 BetrSichV obliges employers to provide regular, documented instruction – for FuPs (Level 1S/1E) a 12-month interval is the standard demanded by trade associations and supervisory authorities. We offer the Annual Update Training efficiently as an online course.
Do I receive a certificate after the training?
Yes – all participants receive a digital participation certificate as Fachkundig unterwiesene Person (FuP) per DGUV Information 209-093 after the knowledge check. The certificate serves as proof for the employer, trade association and supervisory authorities.
