Who is Level 2E for?

Level 2E is aimed at technical specialists who work with HV systems in the context of vehicle development, prototype testing or production ramp-up.

Development Engineers
HV engineers at OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers in vehicle development and system integration
Test Drivers & Technicians
Technicians in vehicle testing (summer/winter/EMC) with direct HV contact
Production Ramp-Up (SoP Preparation)
Specialists in production trials and ramp-up before a vehicle enters series production
Test Engineers & Laboratories
Engineers in testing institutes, test labs and component testing with HV systems
Prototype Mechatronics Technicians
Mechatronics specialists who build, convert and prepare prototype vehicles for testing
Engineering Service Providers
Employees at engineering service providers such as IAV, FEV, EDAG, Bertrandt with HV tasks

What does Level 2E cover?

Minimum 24 teaching TP – split between theory and practical. Scope can be extended up to 100 TP depending on vehicle complexity and system specifics.

⚡ Level 2E Course Topics

  • Advanced HV system technology: traction batteries, inverters, e-machines, OBC, DC/DC
  • Characteristics of development and prototype vehicles
  • Working with preliminary or incomplete HV system documentation
  • Specific hazards of non-standardised HV systems before SoP
  • De-energising and securing prototype HV systems (special procedures)
  • Voltage-freedom measurement with CAT III meters
  • PPE requirements for development environments
  • Working in test environments and on dynamometers
  • Risk assessment for development vehicles and test benches
  • Documentation and reporting obligations in development

Note: Those working exclusively with series vehicles only need Level 2S. Level 2E is a separate track for the development sector – not a replacement but a specialisation.
Level 1S/1E is not a prerequisite

Level 2E and Level 1S/1E are two independent qualification pathways under DGUV 209-093 – not a step-by-step ladder. Anyone with the required electrotechnical background can start directly at Level 2E. Completing Level 1S/1E first is neither required nor useful.

Who can attend Level 2E?

DGUV Information 209-093 defines entry routes based on professional background – Level 2S is not a mandatory prerequisite for Level 2E.

Entry Requirements

  • Route A: Qualified electrician per DGUV Regulation 3 (electrician, electronics engineer, electrical engineer) → direct entry Level 2E
  • Route B: Completed technical degree or technician qualification with electrical knowledge → direct entry Level 2E
  • Route C/D: Other technical training → preparatory course or Level 2S first recommended
Before SoP only: Level 2E applies exclusively to vehicles and systems before Start of Production. For series vehicles in workshops and customer service, Level 2S is the correct track.

After this training you may:

  • Independently de-energise prototypes and pre-production vehicles
  • Verify voltage freedom on non-standardised HV systems
  • Work on prototype HV components in the de-energised state
  • Create risk assessments for development vehicles
  • Supervise and guide FuPs (Level 1E) in development environments
  • Work on test benches and in test environments with HV systems

Participation Certificate – Level 2E

After passing the final assessment, all participants receive a personalised certificate as Fachkundige Person Hochvolt (FHV) Level 2E per DGUV Information 209-093.

The certificate documents:

When does the qualification need refreshing?

DGUV clarifies in its official FAQ: a new course is not automatically required – but the qualification must be kept current. According to DGUV FAQ (Ch. 4.26), a refresh is required when:

  • New vehicle types or HV technologies are introduced (e.g. solid-state batteries)
  • Relevant standards or regulations are updated
  • New HV components or tools are introduced at your facility
  • More than 12 months have passed without active HV work

Regardless, the annual instruction under DGUV Regulation 1 remains mandatory. Annual instruction →

FAQ – HV Training Level 2E

How much does the Level 2E training cost?
From €999 per person excl. VAT. Since Level 2E covers at least 24 TP and can extend to 100 TP depending on vehicle and system complexity, the exact price varies. For OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers we provide individual quotes – please get in touch.
Who needs Level 2E?
All engineers, technicians and mechatronics specialists working on HV systems in vehicle development, prototype testing, validation drives or production ramp-up. Typical employers: OEMs (VW, BMW, Mercedes, Stellantis), Tier-1 suppliers (Bosch, Continental, ZF, Magna), engineering service providers (IAV, EDAG, Bertrandt) and testing institutes.
Do I need to complete Level 2S before Level 2E?
Not necessarily – the entry route depends on your qualifications. With a completed electrical engineering background or a degree in a technical discipline you can enter Level 2E directly (entry routes A or B). Level 2S is a separate track for series vehicles and is not a mandatory prerequisite.
Why does Level 2E take longer than Level 2S?
Development vehicles present special challenges: HV systems are not yet fully documented, wiring diagrams may change, safety functions are not yet fully implemented. These uncertainties require a significantly deeper understanding of HV technology. For complex systems (new cell chemistries, 800 V platforms) up to 100 TP may be required.
Does Level 2E apply to Tesla Gigafactory employees?
Yes – employees in production and development at Tesla (e.g. Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg in Grünheide) need a valid DGUV 209-093 qualification for HV system work. Depending on the activity (series production or development/testing), Level 2S or 2E applies. We deliver inhouse training directly at your site.
How often must the Level 2E qualification be renewed?
Every 3 years and after more than 12 months' interruption of HV contact – per DGUV Information 209-093. Since technology in the development sector evolves rapidly (800 V, new cell chemistries, solid-state batteries), we recommend annual refresher instruction.
