What does Level 2S cover?

Course content is fully based on DGUV Information 209-093. A practical component of at least 8 TP is mandatory in every entry route – the theory scope depends on your prior electrical knowledge and ranges from 8 TP (Route B) to 72 TP (Route A, see "Who can attend?").

⚡ Theory – 8 to 72 TP per entry route

  • Fundamentals of electrical engineering and HV system technology
  • Architecture and function: traction battery, inverter, e-machine, charging system
  • Hazards from electrical current above 60 V DC / 30 V AC
  • Safety concepts and vehicle safety systems (ISOSPI, BMS)
  • The 5 safety rules per DGUV Regulation 3
  • Vehicle-specific de-energising and securing against re-energising
  • PPE: Class 0 insulating gloves, VDE-approved tools, CAT III meters
  • Legal framework: ArbSchG, TRBS, DGUV Regulation 3, DGUV Information 209-093
  • Risk assessment and documentation obligations

🛠 Practical – min. 8 TP

  • Fitting and inspecting personal protective equipment
  • Vehicle-specific de-energising on a real HV vehicle
  • Voltage-freedom measurement with CAT III meters (multi-point)
  • Securing against re-energising (lockout/tagout)
  • Final assessment: written and/or oral knowledge check
Note: The practical section requires physical attendance – it cannot be conducted remotely. The theory section may be delivered hybrid/online on request.
Level 1S/1E is not a prerequisite

Level 2S and Level 1S/1E are two independent qualification pathways under DGUV 209-093 – not a step-by-step ladder. Anyone with the required electrotechnical background can start directly at Level 2S. Completing Level 1S/1E first is neither required nor useful.

Who can attend?

DGUV Information 209-093 defines three entry routes (A–C) for Level 2S. What matters is your existing electrical knowledge – not your job title.

Entry Routes A–C

  • Route A – no prior electrical knowledge, with technical vocational training: min. 80 TP (of which ≥ 8 TP practical)
  • Route B – with prior electrical knowledge in the automotive field (e.g. automotive electrics, mechatronics, mechanics): min. 16 TP (of which ≥ 8 TP practical)
  • Route C – with theoretical electrical knowledge: scope individual, min. 8 TP practical
Already qualified without training: Automotive mechatronics technicians trained under the 2013 training regulation automatically hold the Level 2S qualification. Bodywork and vehicle construction mechanics (2014 training regulation) reach it after a one-week inter-company supplementary training with a passed "high-voltage technology" competence exam.
Series vehicles after SoP: Level 2S applies exclusively to vehicles in series production (after Start of Production). For prototypes, development and pre-production vehicles, Level 2E is required.

After this training you may:

  • Independently de-energise and secure HV vehicles
  • Verify voltage freedom autonomously and document it
  • Work on HV systems and components in the de-energised state
  • Provide expert instruction to support Fachkundig unterwiesene Personen (FuPs)
  • Supervise and guide FuPs (Level 1S)
  • Create and approve risk assessments for HV work

How does the Level 2S training work?

The duration depends on the entry route: with prior electrical knowledge in the automotive field (Route B), 16 teaching TP over 2 training days are sufficient. Without prior electrical knowledge (Route A), at least 80 TP over roughly 10 training days are required – the practical component stays at min. 8 TP, only the theory section is extended accordingly. Training is delivered as an inhouse event directly at your premises. Example schedule for Route B:

DAY 1 · THEORY

Theoretical Foundations

min. 8 teaching periods (Route B; up to 72 TP without prior electrical knowledge)

  • Welcome, introductions, day schedule
  • Electrical engineering fundamentals and HV system knowledge
  • Hazards of electrical energy – body current, arc flash
  • Safety concepts, vehicle safety systems, IPBS/BMS
  • The 5 safety rules: de-energise, lock, verify
  • PPE requirements and selecting appropriate measuring instruments
  • Legal framework and documentation obligations
  • Exam preparation and open questions
DAY 2 · PRACTICAL + ASSESSMENT

Practical Exercises & Final Test

min. 8 teaching TP

  • Brief theory recap
  • PPE fitting – practical exercise and mutual check
  • Vehicle-specific de-energising on a real HV vehicle
  • Multi-point voltage-freedom measurement with CAT III meter
  • Securing and labelling against re-energising
  • Final assessment (written/oral)
  • Certificate issuance

The participation certificate is a qualification proof per DGUV Information 209-093. Formal appointment as Fachkundige Person Hochvolt (FHV) in the company is the responsibility of the employer as part of the risk assessment process.

When does the qualification need refreshing?

DGUV clarifies in its official FAQ: a new course is not automatically required – but the qualification must be kept current. According to DGUV FAQ (Ch. 4.26), a refresh is required when:

  • New vehicle types or HV technologies are introduced (e.g. solid-state batteries)
  • Relevant standards or regulations are updated
  • New HV components or tools are introduced at your facility
  • More than 12 months have passed without active HV work

Regardless, the annual instruction under DGUV Regulation 1 remains mandatory. Annual instruction →

FAQ – HV Training Level 2S

How much does the Level 2S training cost?
From €699 per person excl. VAT. For inhouse groups of 4 or more at your premises, please ask for an individual quote – depending on group size and location the per-person price can be lower than at external course providers.
How long does the Level 2S training take?
This depends on the entry route: with prior electrical knowledge in the automotive field (Route B), 16 teaching periods (45 min each) over 2 days are sufficient. Without prior electrical knowledge (Route A), at least 80 TP over roughly 10 days are required. In both cases, at least 8 TP of practical training on the vehicle are mandatory. The theory section can optionally be delivered as a remote unit beforehand.
Can I skip Level 1S and go directly to Level 2S?
Yes – Level 1S is not a mandatory prerequisite for Level 2S. With prior electrical knowledge in the automotive field (Route B) or as an automotive mechatronics technician already automatically qualified (training since 2013), direct entry is possible. Without prior knowledge, entry is also possible (Route A), but requires a larger training scope (min. 80 TP).
What is the difference between Level 2S and Level 2E?
Level 2S applies to series vehicles after SoP (Start of Production) – all production hybrid and electric vehicles on the market. Level 2E covers prototypes, pre-production and development vehicles, where standardised safety concepts cannot be assumed. Professionals working exclusively with series vehicles do not need Level 2E.
How often must the Level 2S qualification be renewed?
DGUV Information 209-093 recommends a refresher training after 3 years at the latest and after more than 12 months' interruption of HV contact. Many trade associations and employers additionally require annual instruction.
Do I receive a certificate after the training?
Yes – after passing the final assessment all participants receive a personalised participation certificate per DGUV Information 209-093. The certificate proves the Fachkundige Person Hochvolt (FHV) qualification for Level 2S series vehicles and is issued digitally. Formal appointment as Fachkundige Person Hochvolt (FHV) within the company is the employer's responsibility.
