What the law requires of your workshop

With the growing share of electric and hybrid vehicles in German workshops, employers are legally obliged to ensure the safety of their staff when working with HV systems.

§3 ArbSchG – Employer's basic duty

The employer is obliged to take the necessary occupational health and safety measures and to take into account the safety and health protection of employees at work. This includes verifiable qualification for working with high-voltage vehicles.

  • Prepare risk assessment per ArbSchG §5
  • Identify qualification needs and implement them
  • Document and retain qualification records

DGUV Regulation 3 + DGUV 209-093

DGUV Information 209-093 defines the binding qualification levels for work on HV vehicles. For automotive workshops this means:

  • At least 1 Fachkundige Person Hochvolt (FHV, Level 2S) per business
  • All staff with HV contact: at least Fachkundig unterwiesene Person (FuP, Level 1S)
  • Annual refresher training recommended to maintain qualification

Liability risk: Without verifiable qualification, the workshop owner is personally liable in the event of accidents involving HV vehicles. The employer's liability insurer and trade association (Berufsgenossenschaft) may refuse to pay claims. HV qualification is not optional – it is a legal requirement.

Workshop activities – qualification levels at a glance

The required qualification level depends on the tasks performed on HV vehicles in your workshop.

Workshop activity Qualification Level Required?
Vehicle reception, car wash, vehicle handover Sensibilisierte Person (sensitised person) S/E Recommended
Moving HV vehicle, de-energised tasks Fachkundig unterwiesene Person (FuP) 1S Required
Maintenance, inspection, de-energised HV components Fachkundig unterwiesene Person (FuP) 1S Required
Diagnostics, de-energising, work on HV system Fachkundige Person Hochvolt (FHV) 2S Required
HV battery, inverter or e-motor replacement Fachkundige Person Hochvolt (FHV) 2S Required
Live HV work (special cases only) FHV under voltage 3S Special cases

Level S/E = Sensitised person · 1S = Fachkundig unterwiesene Person (FuP) · 2S = Fachkundige Person Hochvolt (FHV) series vehicles · 3S = FHV live HV work

Typical training plan: workshop with 5 mechanics

For an automotive workshop with 5 technicians, we recommend the following qualification structure – achievable in a single on-site training day:

1

Level 1S – FuP (all 5 mechanics)

2–4 teaching units (approx. half a day): HV technology basics, hazards, safety measures, emergency procedures. Prerequisite for all further qualifications and mandatory for every employee with HV vehicle contact.

2

Level 2S – FHV Series (1–2 mechanics)

16–80 teaching units (depending on prior knowledge and vehicle portfolio): in-depth HV systems technology, de-energising, diagnostics, work on de-energised HV systems. Built on Level 1S. This mechanic takes on the FHV role in the business.

3

Documentation & certificates

All participants receive normatively compliant certificates per DGUV 209-093 on the day of training. Documentation can be presented to the trade association (Berufsgenossenschaft), insurers and customers.

4

Annual refresher training (following year)

To maintain qualifications, we recommend an annual refresher (2–4 teaching units) – also available remotely. This keeps all qualifications current and your workshop HV-ready.

FAQ – HV training for automotive workshops

As soon as your workshop performs work on HV vehicles (electric or hybrid vehicles with more than 60 V DC on-board voltage), at least one Fachkundige Person Hochvolt (FHV, Level 2S) is required on site. This obligation arises from §3 ArbSchG, DGUV Regulation 3 and DGUV Information 209-093. All other staff who come into contact with such vehicles require at least the Fachkundig unterwiesene Person (FuP, Level 1S) qualification.
Costs depend on the level and number of participants. Level 1S (FuP) starts from €149 per person, Level 2S (FHV) from €699 per person, all plus VAT. For on-site training with 5 or more participants you will usually receive a lower group price – and travel and downtime costs for your staff are eliminated. We provide a free, no-obligation quote within 24 hours.
Yes – DGUV Information 209-093 is manufacturer- and brand-independent. Our training covers all common HV vehicle manufacturers (BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Audi, Toyota, Hyundai, Tesla and many more). For the practical section we preferably use the vehicles already present in your workshop. Some manufacturers (e.g. Toyota, BMW) also have additional manufacturer-specific qualifications – please ask us about these.
The initial qualification per DGUV 209-093 has no fixed expiry date. However, an annual refresher training is strongly recommended to stay current with new vehicle technology. Many manufacturers and insurers explicitly require this annual update. After a prolonged break from HV work, repeat training may be necessary.
