HV Training Intervals

HV Training Intervals (HV-Schulungsintervalle): DGUV 209-093 requires an annual safety briefing for every HV-qualified employee. A full refresher course is recommended every 3 years. Employees with more than 12 months without HV contact must repeat the full qualification before resuming HV work.

The Three Renewal Obligations at a Glance

Every Year
Annual Safety Briefing
Mandatory for all HV-qualified employees (FHV and FuP). Covers regulation updates, incident reviews, PPE and emergency procedures. Must be documented.
Every 3 Years
Full Refresher Course
DGUV 209-093 recommendation (not a hard legal requirement). Many Berufsgenossenschaften and OEM standards require it. Renews practical competency at full course duration.
After 12+ Months
Full Re-Qualification
If an employee has had no HV contact for over 12 months, they must complete the full qualification course again before resuming HV work.
Employer Duty
Documentation
All briefings and refreshers must be documented with date, content, trainer name and participant signatures. Records are a legal obligation, not optional.

What the Annual Briefing Must Cover

The annual HV safety briefing is not simply a reminder session. DGUV 209-093 requires it to be substantive and documented. Typical content includes:

Employer Documentation Requirements

The employer (or the vEFK on their behalf) must maintain a qualification register showing:

Does the annual briefing count as a refresher course?
No. The annual briefing (typically 2–4 hours, covering theory updates and reminders) does not replace the 3-year refresher course (which involves practical exercises at full course duration). Both serve different purposes: the annual briefing maintains ongoing awareness; the refresher renews practical competency and typically results in a new qualification certificate.
What happens if an employee misses their annual briefing?
An employee whose annual briefing has lapsed is no longer considered currently qualified under DGUV 209-093. The employer must suspend that person from HV work until the briefing is completed. In the event of an accident, a lapsed annual briefing is treated as employer negligence and can invalidate occupational accident insurance cover.
