What is HV Level 2S?
HV Level 2S is a qualification level under
DGUV Information 209-093 for
Fachkundige Personen Hochvolt (FHV) on series production vehicles after SoP (Start of Production). It authorises the holder to independently de-energise HV vehicles, verify the voltage-free state and work on all standard hybrid and electric vehicles in the voltage-free state.
What Level 2S Authorises
Level 2S qualification is the core requirement for any workshop servicing high-voltage vehicles. An FHV holding Level 2S may independently carry out the following:
- Independently de-energise HV vehicles following the vehicle-specific procedure (service disconnect, vehicle diagnostics)
- Independently verify and document the voltage-free state with a CAT III multimeter
- Work in the voltage-free state on HV systems and components (battery, inverter, charging components)
- Supervise and instruct FuP – FuP may only work under the supervision of an FHV
- Prepare and approve risk assessments for HV work
- Secure against re-energisation and monitor the de-energisation process
Level 2S vs. Level 2E – What is the Difference?
The letter indicates which vehicle type the qualification covers:
| Criterion |
Level 2S |
Level 2E |
| Vehicle type |
Series vehicles after SoP |
Prototypes & development vehicles (before/outside SoP) |
| Safety concepts |
Standardised (type-approved HV connectors, interlock) |
Non-standardised – individual per vehicle |
| Typical application |
Workshops, dealers, fleet operators, fleet workshops |
OEM development, test rigs, pre-development |
| Training duration |
16 teaching periods (2 days) |
16+ teaching periods (additional prototype content) |
For the vast majority of automotive workshops and dealerships, Level 2S is the correct and sufficient qualification. Level 2E is reserved for specialised applications at OEMs and suppliers.
Prerequisites for Level 2S
DGUV 209-093 defines four entry routes (A–D) for Level 2S qualification. The entry route determines whether preparatory training is needed:
- Route A – Qualified Electrician: Persons qualifying as Elektrofachkraft under DGUV Regulation 3 (e.g. electrician, electrical master, electrical engineer) – direct entry to Level 2S
- Route B – Automotive Mechatronics Specialist: With demonstrated basic electrical knowledge (at least 18 instructional hours in electrical systems during apprenticeship) – direct entry
- Route C – Other Technical Qualification: With verifiable electrical knowledge (certificate, course record) – direct entry after knowledge assessment
- Route D – No Electrical Background: Complete Sensibilisierte Person (Level S/E) first, then entry to Level 2S
Training Duration
Level 2S training is structured over 2 days and comprises 16 teaching TP (each 45 min):
- At least 8 teaching TP of theory: HV fundamentals, vehicle technologies, DGUV standards, hazard identification, PPE, documentation
- At least 8 teaching TP of practical: De-energising real HV vehicles, voltage-free verification, PPE handling, multimeter use
- The practical component must take place in-person – remote practical is not permitted or recognised
- Completion: written learning outcome check and practical final assessment
